There are also small traces of minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus. Although these components make it effective, some people have ended up experiencing minimal benefits or nothing at all. There is no any magic pill for weight loss and more research is required to determine the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar pills in the man body as well as women body.

  • Apple cider vinegar is highly acidic and some people can’t tolerate it very well. For those who have digestive issues such as the inflammatory bowel disease, this liquid/pill can be very irritating.
  • Popping the apple cider vinegar pills alone isn’t effective for weight loss. It’s important to combine it with a calorie-restricted diet and a good workout routine.

The Cost

Apple cider vinegar is very affordable. A 16 oz. a bottle costs around $5.00 while a bottle which contains 60 pills may cost around $15 to $20. However, if you are on a low budget and you cannot afford the pills, then you can buy the liquid vinegar. To avoid throat irritation and the erosion of the teeth enamel, you can blend it in a smoothie or use it as a salad dressing.

The Bottom Line

Note that apple cider vinegar pills are categorized as supplements hence they are not regulated by the FDA. This means that they may be formulated with unknown ingredients or varying amounts of the vinegar. As a result of this, it is very difficult to assess the safety of the pills. If you want to use this vinegar for weight loss or any other function, take it in the liquid form.  You can do this by simply mixing two tablespoons of the vinegar with a glass of water and then drink it. In addition to that, you can add a teaspoon of the vinegar to a soup, smoothie or to salad dressings. If you are drinking an apple cider vinegar solution, you can add honey as a sweetener.

How Your Eyelids Function and Why They Develop a Stye

The eyelids are probably one of the most underappreciated yet crucial parts of the body. From the outside, they simply look like a flap of skin. However, they actually play a crucial role in your eye health by providing these four primary functions:

Science has repeatedly proven that food is a profoundly effective medicine that can activate many healthy nuclear transcription factors in your body. Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, for example, have been repeatedly shown to be one of nature’s most valuable health-promoting foods, capable of preventing a number of common health issues.

Cruciferous veggies, which include broccoli, cabbage, collards, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale and bok choi, just to name a few, contain several plant compounds that are important for optimal health, including powerful chemoprotective compounds.

One of the most well-known of these is sulforaphane, an organic sulfur. Studies have shown sulforaphane supports normal cell function and division while causing apoptosis (programmed cell death) in colon,1 liver,2 prostate,3 breast4 and tobacco-induced lung cancer.5 Just three servings of broccoli per week may reduce a man’s risk of prostate cancer by more than 60 percent.6

Sulforaphane may also be helpful in the treatment of breast cancer. When tested in mice and cell cultures, sulforaphane was found to actually target and kill cancer stem cells, thereby preventing the formation and spread of tumors.7

Another important chemoprotective phytochemical found in cruciferous veggies is indole-3 carbinol (I3C),8 which in your gut is converted into diindolylmethane (DIM). DIM in turn boosts immune function and, like sulforaphane, plays a role in the prevention and treatment of cancer.9,10

How Cruciferous Vegetables Help Prevent Colon Cancer

Recent research11,12 has again confirmed the importance of cruciferous vegetables for cancer prevention, in this case colon cancer. As reported by Newsweek,13 “Scientists found mice who were fed a diet containing a chemical found in the brassica family of plants had healthier guts, and were less likely to develop inflammation and colon cancer.”

Aside from converting to DIM, which has anticancer activity, I3C also works by activating a protein called aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), which communicates with immune and epithelial cells in your gut lining, thereby helping to reduce inflammation caused by pathogenic bacteria.

AhR also helps stem cells convert into mucus-producing cells in your gut lining. These cells also help extract nutrients from the foods you eat, all of which translate into improved gut function and health.

When you have insufficient amounts of AhR, the stem cells end up producing malfunctioning cells that divide in an uncontrolled manner. This abnormal cell division is ultimately what results in abnormal growths that can turn into malignant tumors in your colon.

Consumption of cruciferous vegetables essentially helps prevent this chain of events by boosting I3C. According to coauthor Amina Metidji, Ph.D., with the Francis Crick Institute:14

“When we fed [the mice] a diet enriched with I3C, they did not develop inflammation or cancer. Interestingly, when mice whose cancer was already developing were switched to the I3C-enriched diet, they ended up with significantly fewer tumors, which were also more benign.”

Molecular immunologist and senior author Gitta Stockinger, Ph.D., added:15,16

“While there are many reports linking consumption of vegetables to improved health there was so far no molecular basis for this. Our study shows what component of vegetables affects the intestinal barrier and how it does so …

Seeing the profound effect of diet on gut inflammation and colon cancer was very striking. Many vegetables produce chemicals that keep AhR stimulated in the gut. We found that AhR-promoting chemicals in the diet can correct defects caused by insufficient AhR stimulation …

While we cannot influence our genes that may predispose us to certain diseases, we can do something about the environmental influences via our diet to ensure that our protective gut barrier is optimally supported. You probably cannot eat too many vegetables.”

Other Health Benefits of I3C

I3C also has other health benefits. Of the various indoles, I3C and its metabolites are powerful antioxidants. Research has also shown it can help balance both male and female hormones, thereby supporting reproductive health in both sexes.

Importantly, DIM has been shown to balance 4-hydroxyestrone, an estrogen that can have damaging effects and plays a role in reproductive cancers. In one study, supplementation with I3C at dosages of 200 and 400 milligrams per day for three months reversed early-stage cervical cancer in 8 of 17 women.17 As noted by Superfoods:18

“[I3C] initiates a series of reactions in the body that culminates in the elimination of estrogen. Researchers have observed that metabolism of estrogen occurs via one of two pathways:

The ‘harmful’ metabolic pathway, 16 alpha-hydroxylation or the ‘beneficial’ metabolic pathway, 2-hydroxylation. [I3C] helps to regulate cell growth rates, and helps to change a strong and inflammatory form of estrogen into a safer, less aggressive form.”

Other studies suggest I3C works synergistically with the anticancer drug tamoxifen to improve outcomes. I3C also supports your liver’s detoxification processes, and helps heal liver damage by supporting the reproduction of normal, healthy cells.

Cruciferous Veggies Are an Important Part of an Anticancer Diet

Sulforaphane is one of several compounds known as isothiocyanates, which have the ability to spark hundreds of genetic changes, activating some genes that fight cancer and switch off others that fuel tumors.19

As noted in one study,20 “research suggests that cruciferous vegetables are not only an important source of nutrients, but perhaps a key to eliminating cancer as life threatening disease.” According to Olga Azarenko, a scientist at the UC Santa Barbara laboratories, whose research shows how the healing power of these vegetables works at the cellular level:21

“Breast cancer, the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women, can be protected against by eating cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and near relatives of cabbage such as broccoli and cauliflower. These vegetables contain compounds called isothiocyanates which we believe to be responsible for the cancer-preventive and anti-carcinogenic activities in these vegetables.”

Broccoli, and even more so broccoli sprouts — which typically contain anywhere from 20 to 50 times more chemoprotective compounds than mature broccoli22,23 — contain the highest amounts of isothiocyanates. Other vegetables containing isothiocyanates include:


Other Health Benefits of Cruciferous Vegetables

Cancer prevention is not the only health benefit you can reap from eating more cruciferous veggies though. Not by a long shot!

These veggies provide dozens of super-nutrients that support optimal, bodywide health, including fiber, the anticancer compounds sulforaphane24,25,26,27 and glucoraphanin,28,29 anti-inflammatory and free radical quenching phenolic compounds30,31,32 and immune-boosting DIM.33,34

Aside from cancer, these and other compounds found in broccoli and other cruciferous veggies have been shown to:35



















Lower your risk of obesity

Suppress inflammation, in part by reducing (by as much as 73 percent) reactive oxygen species that cause cell damage,36 and in part through the creation of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). The fiber in cruciferous veggies is broken down into SCFAs by gut bacteria, and SCFAs have been shown to lessen your risk of inflammatory diseases37

Improve Type 2 diabetes by reducing glucose production. In one study, patients with dysregulated diabetes who received broccoli sprout extract in addition to metformin had 10 percent lower fasting blood glucose levels than the placebo group.38 Sulforaphane also lowers your risk of other health problems associated with Type 2 diabetes, such as heart disease and stroke39

Support healthy liver function by improving gene expression in your liver. It also lowers your risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Reduce risk of osteoarthritis,40,41,42,43 in part by blocking enzymes linked to joint destruction44

Improve blood pressure in those with hypertension45

Improve allergies and asthma by reducing oxidative stress in your airways and countering cell damage caused by pollution and allergens46

Improve kidney function and prevent kidney disease by normalizing DNA methylation.47 DNA methylation48 is the process by which a methyl group is added to part of a DNA molecule. This is a crucial part of normal cell function as it allows cells to “remember who they are and where they have been.”

DNA methylation also suppresses viral- and other disease-related gene expression. DNA methylation plays a role in a number of diseases, including hypertension, kidney function,49 gut health50 and cancer

Improve verbal communication and decreasing repetitive behaviors in children with autism — This effect is thought to be related to sulforaphane’s ability to trigger a heat-shock response — a biological effect that protects cells from stress during a fever. Previous research has shown that, in some autistic people, repetitive behaviors decline during fevers.

In this study, 80 percent of the participants had a history of this fever effect. Positive results from sulforaphane were observed within as little as four weeks. Communication improved, as did symptoms of hyperactivity and irritability. By the end of the 18-week study, about 50 percent of those receiving sulforaphane experienced improved ability to interact socially51

Cruciferous Veggies Improve Arterial Suppleness

Another important health benefit of cruciferous vegetables is their heart-healthy influence. One study64 that examined the effects of vegetable intake on carotid artery measures, which are indicative of arterial health (narrow, hard arteries restrict blood flow and can lead to heart attack and stroke), found those who consumed the most cruciferous vegetables had thinner and therefore healthier carotid arteries than those who consumed the fewest.

On average, those who ate at least three daily servings of cruciferous veggies had nearly 0.05 millimeters (mm) thinner carotid arterial walls (the artery in your neck) than those who ate two servings or less. Each 0.1-mm decrease in thickness is associated with a decreased stroke and heart attack risk ranging from 10 to 18 percent, so the results were considered rather significant.

Overall, each 10-gram daily serving of cruciferous vegetables was associated with a 0.8 percent reduction in carotid artery wall thickness. This link was not found with other types of vegetables. According to study author Lauren Blekkenhorst:

“After adjusting for lifestyle, cardiovascular disease risk factors (including medication use) as well as other vegetable types and dietary factors, our results continued to show a protective association between cruciferous vegetables and carotid artery wall thickness65

However, this does not discount the importance of other vegetable types, as we know increasing a variety of all vegetables is important to maintain good health. Our research suggests that recommendations to include a couple of servings of cruciferous vegetables amongst the recommended amount of vegetables may help to optimize the vascular health benefits.66

Eat More Cruciferous Veggies to Slow Age-Related Decline in Health

Last but certainly not least, cruciferous vegetables have also been shown to slow age-related decline in health by restoring metabolism to more youthful levels.67,68,69 A basic premise of aging is that your cells’ ability to produce energy declines over time. With less available energy, cell repair and maintenance declines as well, and with that, degeneration sets in.

Cruciferous vegetables improve your metabolism via an enzyme called nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). NMN plays a role in producing nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), a compound involved in mitochondrial health and energy metabolism. Previous research has shown that, with age, your body loses its capacity to create NAD — an effect thought to be related to, or the result of, chronic inflammation.

Studies have shown that taking NAD directly is ineffective, however. Taking its precursor, NMN or nicotinamide riboside (NR), has been shown to be far more effective. In fact, when dissolved and administered in water, it takes just three minutes for NMN to appear in your blood, and once there, the NMN is quickly converted into NAD in multiple tissues.

Other research70 has shown that when NAD synthesis in fat tissue is defective, metabolic dysfunction occurs throughout your entire body, including your skeletal muscle, heart and liver. When NMN was administered, all of these dysfunctions were reversed. As noted by the authors,71 “That means NAD in adipose tissue is a critical regulator of whole body metabolism.”

The take-home message here is that cruciferous vegetables like broccoli are a natural, rich source in NMN, and by improving your NAD status, you’ll improve your overall metabolism and mitochondrial health, which benefits your whole body.

My personal NAD precursor preference is NR. Because of its molecular structure, it’s easier for NR to get into the cells where it is converted to NMN through NR kinases and then ultimately to NAD+.

How to Maximize Health Benefits of Broccoli

The isothiocyanate sulforaphane is formed when you chop or chew broccoli, as this combines its precursor glucoraphanin with the enzyme myrosinase. Once swallowed, gut bacteria help release some of broccoli’s sulforaphane so your body can benefit, but it’s a tricky proposition because sulforaphane is attached to a sugar molecule with a sulfur bond.

In order for the sulforaphane to be released, an enzyme in the broccoli breaks off the sugar to release it. However, the sulforaphane can be easily inactivated by a sulfur-grabbing protein.

Researchers have found one of the best ways to maximize sulforaphane your body can use is to steam it lightly for three to four minutes until it’s tough-tender.72 This is just enough heat to kill the epithiospecifier protein, which attaches to the sulfur and greatly depletes the amount of bioavailable sulforaphane. Do not steam longer than five minutes.

If you opt for boiling, blanch the broccoli in boiling water for no more than 20 to 30 seconds, then immerse it in cold water to stop the cooking process. Another option is to eat broccoli sprouts.

Fresh broccoli sprouts are FAR more potent than whole broccoli, allowing you to eat far less in terms of quantity. Tests have revealed that 3-day-old broccoli sprouts consistently contain anywhere from 10 to 100 times the amount of glucoraphanin — the precursor to sulforaphane — found in mature broccoli.73

The sulforaphane in broccoli and other cruciferous veggies will be further augmented if paired with a myrosinase-containing food.74 (Again, myrosinase is the enzyme that converts glucoraphanin to sulforaphane.) Myrosinase-rich foods include mustard seed,75 daikon radishes, wasabi, arugula or coleslaw, with mustard seed being the most potent.

Despite its somewhat sexualized name, spermidine, which one source1 calls the “most unappetizing-sounding health boon ever,” is a beneficial compound that so happens to have been first isolated in human semen. Well-known food sources of spermidine include aged cheese and fermented soy products, as well as chicken, mushrooms, pears and potatoes.

If you eat any of those foods regularly, you’re likely getting healthy doses of spermidine. Let’s take a closer look at some of the benefits of spermidine, especially as it relates to its involvement with autophagy, the process your body uses to destroy and recycle cellular components.

What Is Spermidine?

While the term spermidine seems to imply a substance originating from sperm, it is actually a polyamine compound with various metabolic functions found in living tissues and foods like aged cheese and fermented soy. It is so named because it was originally isolated from semen. As an organic compound having more than two amino groups, polyamines are essential components of your cells.

Importantly, polyamines encourage cellular autophagy, which has positive implications for aging and longevity, as discussed in the featured video by Naomi Whittel, former CEO of Twinlab and author of “Glow 15: A Science-Based Plan to Lose Weight, Revitalize Your Skin, and Invigorate Your Life.”

Research has shown you also need compounds like spermidine to protect against food allergies, cancer and heart disease. According to a study published in Trends in Food Science & Technology, polyamines such as spermidine, putrescine and spermine play various roles in human cellular metabolism and the synthesis of protein, RNA and DNA.2 The study authors also note:3

“[F]ood is an important source of the polyamines required to support cell renewal and growth. Although the bioavailability and the mechanism of the uptake of polyamines in the gastrointestinal tract are not fully established, it is evident at least some proportion of the polyamines in the diet can be absorbed and utilized by the body.”

Dietary intake of polyamines like spermidine are estimated to be higher in the Mediterranean region (700 micromoles per day) than Northern Europe and the U.K. (350 to 500 micromoles) as well as the U.S. (250 to 550 micromoles).4,5 As to the differences in consumption by region, one study author said, “These dietary differences in the pattern of foods and polyamine intake have been associated with differences in the incidence of chronic diseases — the Mediterranean diet is known to be protective.”6

Higher Spermidine Intake Linked to Lower Mortality

A 2018 study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition7 involving 829 participants ages 45 to 84 linked higher spermidine intake to lower mortality. Diets involving three levels of spermidine consumption were assessed through more than 2,500 dietitian-administered food questionnaires conducted in 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010.

During the follow-up assessments, which took place between 1995 and 2015, 341 participants had died. About the results, the study authors stated, “The difference in mortality risk between the top and bottom third of spermidine intakes was similar to that associated with a 5.7-year younger age. Our findings lend epidemiologic support to the concept that nutrition rich in spermidine is linked to increased survival in humans.”8

Lower Your Child’s Risk of Food Allergies With Spermidine

A 2009 study conducted at Belgium’s University of Liege,9 uncovered a connection between polyamine intake and the development of food allergies. They assert the concentrations of spermidine and spermine in mother’s breast milk are likely influenced by diet, genetics and lifestyle factors. Their findings suggest:10

  • Spermidine and spermine concentrations are generally lower in infant formulas than in a mother’s breast milk
  • A baby’s probability of developing a food allergy can reach 80 percent if the mean spermine concentration in the milk they are given is lower than 2 micromolar/milliliter (nmol/ml)
  • The baby’s chances of developing a food allergy falls to zero if the mean spermine concentration in their milk is higher than 13 nmol/ml
  • The intestinal permeability to macromolecules in premature babies differs depending on whether they are fed breast milk or infant formula

The study authors11 suggest one goal may be to try to increase the polyamine content in human milk as a possible means of reducing diet-related allergies in childhood. After all, they said, with respect to preliminary studies performed on rats, it is possible to modify the polyamine content in their milk through diet. In fact, amino-acids such as arginine and methionine have been shown to increase spermine concentration in milk, they note.

Spermidine Shown to Aid in Diabetes Management

A 2011 South Korean study12 suggests spermidine plays an important role in the protection of your pancreatic cells, which can be very helpful if you have Type 2 diabetes. The researchers note insulin resistance as a key factor for the disease as well as endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. As such, they stated:13

“With an increase in ER stress, pancreatic beta cells start to undergo apoptosis (cell death), leading to a decline in the pancreatic beta cell population. The ER stress arises due to unfolded protein response. Recently, spermidine [has become known] for increasing the longevity in most of the eukaryotes … via induction of the autophagy pathway.

Hence, spermidine can be a candidate for the treatment [of] Type 2 diabetes. Autophagy genes are regulated by mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) dependent or independent pathway via AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Hence either inhibition of mTOR or activation of AMPK by spermidine will play two crucial roles: first being the activation of autophagy and second the reduction of ER stress, which will reduce beta cell death by apoptosis.

Thus, [spermidine] can be a novel therapeutic candidate in the treatment of insulin resistance in Type 2 diabetes and the preservation of pancreatic beta cell mass.”

Consume More Spermidine to Boost Your Cardiac Health

The authors of 2016 research published in the journal Nature Medicine,14 which involved adding spermidine to the drinking water of lab mice, suggest the compound has cardioprotective properties and may help extend longevity. With respect to the mice receiving the compound, researchers found spermidine feeding:15

  • Enhanced cardiac autophagy, mitophagy and mitochondrial respiration
  • Improved the mechano-elastic properties of cardiomyocytes, which coincided with increased titin phosphorylation and suppressed subclinical inflammation
  • Preserved diastolic function
  • Reduced cardiac hypertrophy

After purposely raising the mice’s blood pressure to mimic hypertension-induced congestive heart failure, the team noticed spermidine feeding delayed the progression to heart failure by:16

  • Reducing systemic blood pressure
  • Increasing titin phosphorylation
  • Preventing cardiac hypertrophy and a decline in diastolic function

“The mice not only live longer when we supplement spermidine in their drinking water, but they also are healthier in terms of cardiac function,” noted study coauthor Frank Madeo, Ph.D., professor at the Institute of Molecular Biosciences at Austria’s Medical University of Graz.17

Spermidine Shown to Protect Against Liver Damage and Cancer

Research published in the 2017 journal Cancer Research18 demonstrates how spermidine can be used to prevent liver fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a common type of liver cancer, in lab mice. After receiving a 3 millimolar (mM) spermidine supplement in their drinking water, researchers noted the mice lived longer.

In addition, the spermidine-treated mice were less likely than their untreated counterparts to develop liver fibrosis and cancerous liver tumors, even if they were predisposed for those conditions. Whereas the mice groups treated lifelong with spermidine achieved a 25 percent greater life extension, those treated at older ages saw only a 10-percent increase in longevity.

“[We saw] a dramatic increase in life span of animal models, as much as 25 percent,” said study author Leyuan Liu, Ph.D., assistant professor at the Texas A&M Institute of Biosciences and Technology Center for Translational Cancer Research. “In human terms, that would mean instead of living to about 81 years old, the average American could live to be over 100.”19

Although the results seem promising, Liu is quick to note the results are preliminary and the research has yet to move beyond animal models. “It’s still early,” he said, “but perhaps one day this approach will provide a novel strategy to prolong lifespans, prevent or reverse liver fibrosis and prevent, delay or cure hepatocellular carcinoma in humans.”20

Restore Your Internal Body Clock and Achieve Better Sleep With Spermidine

A 2015 study21 conducted by the department of biological chemistry at Weizmann Institute of Science, in Rehovot, Israel, found giving spermidine to lab mice helped reverse age-related impacts on their internal body clocks. Overall, the researchers found increased polyamine levels helped:22

  • Regulate the circadian period in both cultured cells and lab mice
  • Modulated the interaction between core-clock genes Cryptochrome Circadian Regulator 1 (CRY1) and Period Circadian Regulator 2 (PER2)
  • Reversed age-related lengthening of the circadian period in lab mice

The study authors said, “Our findings suggest a crosstalk between circadian clocks and polyamine biosynthesis and open new possibilities for nutritional interventions against the decay in the body clock’s function with age.”23 About the findings, Medical Daily notes, “If these results could be replicated in humans … spermidine could have profound implications as a sleep aid, and even for ‘turning back the clock’ to beat age-related disease.”24

You Need More Spermidine as You Age

While spermidine is beneficial at any age, it becomes even more
important as you age. A 2006 study published in the Journal of Biochemistry25 measured changes in polyamine levels during aging by using 2-, 10- and 26-week-old female mice. Notably, the polyamine levels in the brain, pancreas and uterus remained the same for all three age groups.

The amount of spermidine found in the intestine decreased slightly and fell significantly in the heart, kidney, liver, lung, ovary, spleen, stomach and thymus, as well as muscle. In the skin, the level of spermidine was maximal in 10-week-old mice and markedly reduced in the 26-week-old group. The study authors asserted, “The results suggest maintenance of polyamine levels may play important roles in the function of the pancreas, brain and uterus in 3- to 26-week-old mice.”26

In humans, the reality is your cell growth slows dramatically without polyamine synthesis. In fact, as you age, cell growth could actually stop unless you consume foods containing polyamines which, by the way, also have been shown to help hair-loss conditions.27 As you can imagine, if you’re not growing new cells, your tissues and organs will begin to deteriorate, accelerating aging. That is why it is important to obtain sufficient amounts of spermidine and the other polyamines in your daily diet.

Although spermidine and the other polyamines are beneficial for nearly everyone, at least one study suggests you should avoid high intakes if you have cancer. A 2014 study published in World Journal of Gastroenterology28 notes the proliferative characteristics of polyamines with respect to gastric cancer. Although polyamines do not cause cancer, research suggests they could encourage the growth and spreading of existing cancer tumors.29

Foods High in Spermidine


Studies suggest polyamines like spermidine are present in aged (fermented) cheese, including blue cheese, Brie, cheddar, Swiss, Gouda, Gruyere, Manchego and Parmesan. Other foods known for their high spermidine content are:30,31,32

Cooked broccoli and cauliflower

Green peas

Green peppers

Miso

Mushrooms

Natto (fermented soy)

Nuts and seeds, such as almonds, hazelnuts and pistachios

Research performed in 2011 at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute found vegetables and meat products to be among the richest sources of spermidine.33 The scientists noted the content of polyamines in aged cheese, however, which has the highest spermidine content of all dairy products, varied considerably between studies.

As you can see above, there are plenty of foods rich in spermidine from which to choose. Since you cannot afford to miss out on this beneficial antiaging compound that has been shown to possess anticancer and cardioprotective properties, you’ll want to ensure your daily diet includes one or more spermidine-rich foods.

Eating Crickets Can Be Good for Your Gut

Not everyone in the world shops at supermarkets for foods to fulfill their need for critical nutrients like vitamins, protein and fiber. Many international cultures have thrived on foods that most in the West wouldn’t think of ingesting, but new research has emerged that shows insects like crickets, grasshoppers and ants can supply not just sustenance, but beneficial compounds that promote gut health and fight inflammation.

Crickets, in particular, were shown to provide a remarkably complex array of proteins and a unique type of fiber that helps balance the microbiota in your intestines. When the bad outweighs the good bacteria in your gut, your ability to fight off disease is thwarted. This imbalance, known as dysbiosis, is linked to metabolic problems, gastrointestinal issues, noncommunicable diseases, allergies, asthma and even a bad mood.1

Your intestinal tract is the home of millions of bacterial cells. It holds three times the number of your own human cells, and encodes at minimum 100 times more genes, according to one study.2 In fact, your gut bacteria impact nearly every aspect of your physiology, including your metabolism, gene expression, immune function, energy and mood.3

Your diet (what you eat) has much more of an influence on your health, including how your gut feels and functions, than many people give it credit for. It determines nearly everything having to do with your gut microbiota, and most importantly with the diversity of those bacteria. You could say your overall health is tied to what’s in your gut, and what’s not. According to the study, published in Scientific Reports:

“Diet is an especially relevant factor in defining the composition of gut microbiota, and even small shifts have demonstrated meaningful effects. Dietary diversity is linked with a more diverse, healthy microbiota that is more adept at adjusting to perturbations. Indigestible dietary carbohydrates (dietary fibers) are the primary energy sources for gut microbiota, and thus shape microbial growth.

Not surprisingly, dietary fiber intake has been shown to contribute to the health of the gut microbiome by increasing diversity in fecal microbiota, and high fiber intake has been associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer, diverticular disease, coronary heart disease and metabolic syndrome.”4

Insects like crickets offer fiber known as chitin, the polysaccharide exoskeleton of most arthropods, which is different from the fiber in fruits and vegetables. Lead study author Valerie Stull, of the University of Wisconsin, also explained that dietary fiber are “indigestible dietary carbohydrates” that the human body doesn’t absorb, but they’re the most prominent food and energy sources needed to develop gut health. “Basically,” she explains, “the fiber that we’re getting in our diet is shaping the growth of microbes in our gut.”5

Who Wants a Nice Scoop of Cricket Powder?

As noted earlier, arguably the majority of people in the West aren’t too keen on the idea of noshing on crickets, no matter how good for you they’re purported to be. That’s why Stull devised a more palatable way for people in the U.S. and Europe to gain the benefits of the chirpy insects: edible insects are now available in powder or “flour” form from multiple sites online.

The powder form is what the 20 volunteers in the clinical trial were given so researchers could investigate potential health benefits. For 14 days, healthy men and women ranging from age 18 to 48 were given either a “control” breakfast shake or muffin, or the same, only with 25 grams of cricket powder mixed in. As a follow-up, the volunteers were then given a normal diet for a week as a “washout period.” Following that, their meals were switched for another 14 days so everyone had a chance to experience the cricket benefits.

Researchers didn’t know which of their study subjects were on the control or the cricket diet, nor when, but they collected blood and stool samples before the trial began. They also administered two before-and-after questionnaires regarding the gastrointestinal experiences of the participants, who served as their own individual control. None of them reported side effects, Tech Times notes. Further:

“Researchers noted no change in microbial composition and gut inflammation. What they did find was an increase in beneficial gut bacteria and in an enzyme linked to good gut health, as well as a decrease in an inflammatory blood protein linked to cancer and depression. That said, researchers note that their study is a small but important one that may be considered when promoting insects as a food source.”6

Along with the increase in metabolic enzymes associated with gut health in the samples collected from the subjects after their cricket doses, there was also a higher ratio of beneficial gut bacteria like Bifidobacterium animalis, a strain linked to improved gastrointestinal function due to its ability to decrease inflammation.

Arthropods Aren’t Just for ‘Other Cultures’ Anymore

Around 2 billion people in the world consume insects on a regular basis.7 Crickets and other arthropods are a mainstay in the diets of people in many areas of the world, so the nutritional benefits found in them may help explain how some populations manage to thrive who don’t routinely eat the “three squares a day” many people in the West insist are necessary for health.

Stull has eaten caterpillars, grasshoppers, cicadas and beetle larvae in many areas of the world, and explains, “Most of the insects consumed around the world are wild-harvested where they are and when they are available. People love flying termites in Zambia, which come out only once or twice a year and are really good; they taste like popcorn and are a crunchy, oily snack.”8

If that makes you shudder, keep in mind that, just as many in the U.S. frowned on the idea of eating sushi just a few decades ago, it’s now sold and purchased happily in the furthest reaches of the U.S., from Oregon to New Hampshire — even in a gas station in Nebraska, Stull notes. A colleague noted that cricket consumption may provide benefits beyond nutrition.9

Stull also reveals a few interesting points about cricket consumption with this riddle: What’s the difference between a lobster and a cricket? Answer: One arthropod is from the ocean; the other is on land. It’s only a matter of perspective which one is a delicacy, as she noted that while cricket consumption may seem “creepy” to some, edible insects are nutritious and often delicious. However, there is a caveat: If you have a shellfish allergy, you may be allergic to crickets, too.

It’s Not Just Crunchy Protein Your Gut Needs

Eating insects as an alternative to or to augment meat intake is a concept that has intrigued a growing number of people who’ve routinely eaten livestock as part of their diet regimen. Some either add cricket powder to gain what they see as their protein requirements or to entirely replace the meat on their plates.

Not only does cricket powder offer a sustainable, environmentally friendly alternative to meat from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), it’s also heart-friendly. Another benefit of insect ingesting is that you can eat as many crickets as you want without the problems that consuming high amounts of CAFO meat causes. Stull also observes:

“There is so much untapped potential when it comes to utilizing edible insects. They are abundant, and when farmed, can generate a high-quality protein with a substantially lower environmental impact than … [CAFO] livestock. They need less feed, land and water to grow — and they generate fewer greenhouse gases.”10

If you’re not sold on eating insects, there are other ways you can develop and benefit from improved gut health. Exercise is an important component, as it has far-reaching advantages, particularly for your brain and metabolic system.11 Exercise can actually increase the diversity of healthy gut bacteria, and that diversity is a crucial key to increasing and balancing the ratio of good bacteria while off-setting the bad.

Another excellent way to balance your microbiome is by eating fermented foods, which is one reason why people in Eastern Europe, for example, have been thriving for centuries. Black tea is also great for gut health, as it also helps balance your bacteria and improve its overall function. The molecules in black tea stay in your intestinal tract longer than other teas and enhance the growth of beneficial bacteria and the formation of microbial metabolites.12 But perhaps avoiding sugar is one of the best ways to optimize your intestinal health.

Taking antibiotics can damage your microbiome, so counterbalancing them with a probiotic is recommended. How you do it, though, is every bit as important. You shouldn’t ingest both antibiotics and probiotics at the same time, as the former may completely offset the benefits of the latter. Instead, leave a buffer of a few hours either before or after taking the antibiotic, and make sure the probiotics you take are from a quality source, says Greg Leyer, chief scientific officer of UAS Laboratories.

What’s so Good About Edible Insects?

The fibrous protein that crickets, grubs and other such critters provide isn’t just a thing people in underdeveloped countries are forced to eat. They’re truly considered treats all over the world, and it’s becoming more common in the U.S. But according to Terminix International,13 in some countries, insects are also consumed as part of the culture and not (necessarily) per necessity for the nutrient content, including:

  • China — Roasted bee larvae and fried silkworm larvae are said to be rich in such vitamins, minerals and trace elements as vitamins B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), iron, copper and zinc.
  • Brazil — In a town called Silveiras, citizens take advantage of the descent of winged queen ants, or içás, in October and November. They remove the wings and either fry or dip them in chocolate, the latter making them taste like mint.
  • The Netherlands — Because they’re a nation that embraces cultural diversity, the Dutch have introduced chocolate infused with ground mealworms.
  • Ghana — As much as 60 percent of the protein consumed in this rural African country comes from termites, which provide such necessary nutrients as oils, fats and proteins.
  • Mexico — Certain areas prepare butter-soaked ant eggs, candy-covered worms and chocolate-covered locusts, not to mention the worms in the alcohol known as mescal.

For thousands of years, numerous cultures have been known to practice entomophagy, the practice of eating insects. Rather than being simply gathered, whole industries have been formed around the “farming” of edible insects, from bees to beetles; grasshoppers to leafhoppers. The concept has a number of advantages, as food shortages and disasters occur all over the world, including in places they weren’t expected. In fact, if industrial farming technologies don’t embrace regenerative agriculture soon, entomophagy may become a necessity sooner rather than later.

If you’re brave enough to get in on the cricket craze, you don’t have to go to Ghana or Southeast Asia. You can purchase those and other crunchy offerings in a growing number of markets throughout the U.S. UK News-Yahoo! related findings by Global Market Insights, which reported that the insect industry is currently valued at $33 million, with potential growth of 40 percent in the next five years.14

As is often the case, the scientists say larger studies are needed to confirm their findings and to determine which cricket components were most helpful in regard to improving human gut health. As Kiro 7 News15 notes, they hope to continue their research and promote insects as a more mainstream food option in the U.S. Crickets may not be the representative “silver bullet” for solving every illness or agricultural challenge, but as Stull states, “they certainly have potential.”

Monsanto’s Secrets Exposed – Will Bayer AG Survive the Fallout?

Conspiracy is defined as “a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful.” Discussing conspiracies is one of the fastest ways to be labeled a nut job, but the fact of the matter is that conspiracies do happen. Toxic industries have a long history of conspiring against the public good, and lately we’ve seen more and more proof of this reality in regard to toxic pesticides.

Of course, I’m talking about glyphosate, and Roundup in particular — Monsanto’s flagship product. Over the years, Monsanto has been accused of — and in some cases found guilty of — lying about and/or covering up the harmful effects of Roundup. Now, the first of thousands of legal cases against Monsanto has resulted in victory, and the conspiracy to hide the truth is plain for all to see.

Jury Rules Monsanto Responsible for Man’s Lethal Cancer

August 10, 2018, a jury ruled in favor of the plaintiff, Dewayne Johnson,1,2,3,4,5 who claimed Monsanto’s Roundup caused his Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. According to the ruling, Monsanto “acted with malice or oppression” and was responsible for “negligent failure” by not warning consumers about the carcinogenicity of its product.

Monsanto, which is now part of Bayer AG, has been ordered to pay $289 million in damages to Johnson. In the video below, Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! interviews lead trial counsel Brent Wisner about this groundbreaking case.

He provides a fairly comprehensive summary of the arguments brought forth during trial, and why Monsanto’s rebuttal to the guilty verdict is wrong from start to finish. He also summarizes evidence revealing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been working on Monsanto’s behalf. As noted by Rolling Stone:6

“[Roundup] … is still on the market. That’s because the EPA, as recently as November 2017, declared the chemical harmless to humans. At trial, Johnson’s legal team was able to demonstrate, via internal emails, just how deeply Monsanto was involved in getting the EPA to reach that conclusion.”

“The Monsanto researchers also behaved irresponsibly when it comes to the question of Roundup’s absorption into the body,” Spiegel writes. “In their own animal experiments back in 2002, the company’s experts discovered that ‘between 5 and 10 percent’ of the substance penetrated the skin of rats.

The rate was much higher than expected and the result had the potential to ‘blow’ the ‘Roundup risk evaluations,’ reads one email. As a consequence, the author of the email wrote: ‘We decided thus to STOP the study.’ Laboratory animals also absorbed more Roundup ingredients through the digestive tract than had been hoped for.

Above all, the Monsanto papers show that the experts were very aware of a fact that is often lost in the public debate: In addition to glyphosate, herbicides like Roundup contain other dangerous chemicals that are necessary to enable the active ingredient to penetrate hard plant walls, among other things. These ingredients are often more harmful than the active ingredient on its own.”

Monsanto Faces Another 5,000 Roundup-Related Lawsuits

Another Roundup-related trial is scheduled to begin in October, and there are an estimated 5,000 additional plaintiffs waiting in the wings for their day in court.9 All believe Roundup exposure caused their cancer. That number is also likely to grow now that a precedence has been set. As reported by Carey Gillam in The Guardian:10

“Monsanto was undone by the words of its own scientists, the damning truth illuminated through the company’s emails, internal strategy reports and other communications.

Testimony and evidence presented at trial showed that the warning signs seen in scientific research dated back to the early 1980s and have only increased over the decades. But with each new study showing harm, Monsanto worked not to warn users or redesign its products, but to create its own science to show they were safe.

The company often pushed its version of science into the public realm through ghostwritten work that was designed to appear independent and thus more credible. Evidence11 was also presented to jurors showing how closely the company had worked with Environmental Protection Agency officials to promote the safety message and suppress evidence of harm.”

How Monsanto Suppresses Science and Deceives the Public



Gillam, a veteran investigative journalist and author of “Whitewash — The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer and the Corruption of Science,” has also gone on record with Goodman talking about how Monsanto tried to discredit her for writing critical pieces about the company and its toxic products.12

She also discusses how “orchestrated fake news” stories have been used to further the corporate agenda and confuse people about the science, using front groups such as the Science Media Center and the American Council on Science and Health, both of which I’ve written about previously (see hyperlinks) and started calling out in 2013.

In a recent Twitter post,13 USRTK posted a copy of an email from Daniel Goldstein, senior science lead of medical sciences and outreach for Monsanto, dated February 26, 2015, in which he tells Monsanto’s food safety scientific affairs lead, John Vicini, Ph.D.:

“While I would love to have more friends and more choices, we don’t have a lot of supporters and can’t afford to lose the few we have. I am well aware of the challenges with ACSH … so I can assure you I am not all starry-eyed about ACSH — they have PLENTY of warts, but: You WILL NOT GET A BETTER VALUE FOR YOUR DOLLAR than ACSH.”

Meanwhile, reporters and scientists who have dared to speak out against Roundup have been mercilessly attacked. Gillam tells Goodman:

“They have gone after people at The New York Times. They’ve gone after Pulitzer Prize winners. They’ve gone after journalists at magazines and newspapers around the world … and scientists,” Gillam says.

“Really anyone who doesn’t parrot the talking points, who tries to bring truth to light, who uncovers facts that are not beneficial to Monsanto, they’re going to go after you.

Luckily, through Freedom of Information Act requests, state record requests, we have obtained documents from regulators, from state universities and of course these internal Monsanto documents that have come to light.

They really do show this ongoing — I call it decades of deception — very strategic efforts by Monsanto, others in the agrichemical industry, to own the science and to discredit anybody who tries to challenge them.”

Monsanto Plans to Appeal

As you’d expect, Monsanto rejects the court’s ruling and has announced it will file an appeal, but according to some legal experts, the company faces an uphill battle. As reported by Reuters:14

“Monsanto said … it planned to challenge the verdict on the grounds that the judge should have barred scientific evidence presented … as insufficient. ‘Plaintiffs are putting forward junk science that is not based upon the 40 years of safe glyphosate use and studies,’ Scott Partridge, Monsanto’s vice president of global strategy, told Reuters …

Monsanto could have difficulty getting the verdict thrown out on those grounds, according to some legal experts who said the judge carefully considered whether to allow Johnson’s scientific evidence under California law and reached a defensible conclusion that the jury should hear it.

‘This is one of those difficult questions at the margins of science and the judge found the evidence simply wasn’t inadmissible,’ said Lars Noah, a law professor at the University of Florida …

Monsanto said the plaintiff’s experts should have been excluded because although they mainly cited respected, peer-reviewed studies, they inappropriately cherry-picked results and used unreliable methods to support the position that glyphosate causes cancer in humans.

But Alexandra Lahav, a law professor at the University of Connecticut, said it was common for experts to rely on the same studies and reach different conclusions to present to a jury during trial.”

Partridge also accused Johnson’s attorneys of attempting to “color science with very emotional arguments designed to inflame jurors.”

According to Harvard Law School professor David Rosenberg, the argument that witness and lawyer remarks “inflamed and prejudiced the jury” is unlikely to get the company anywhere, seeing how “Such remarks are part of the game during trials.” “I can’t see a single reason why Monsanto would think an appeal would be helpful on those grounds,” Rosenberg told Reuters.

Bayer Inherits Monsanto’s Toxic Legacy

Less than three months following Bayer AG’s $66 billion buyout of Monsanto, which took effect May 29, 2018,15,16 the company’s difficulty ahead is becoming crystal clear. As of the first week of June, the Monsanto name no longer exists as a corporate entity,17 but that doesn’t mean its products, or the public’s hostility toward Monsanto, is going away.

Bayer inherits all of it, and may right about now suffer from a bit of buyer’s remorse. In the week following Johnson’s verdict, Bayer stock fell by 18 percent — in mere days evaporating about $14 billion of the company’s market value; a loss equivalent to 21 percent of Monsanto’s acquisition value.18 As reported by The Motley Fool:19

“The combination of the size of the verdict and the number of lawsuits filed suggests that the total amount necessary to settle all cases could stretch well into the billions of dollars.

The negative publicity associated with the award could also significantly reduce future Roundup sales and, perhaps, demand for Monsanto crop seeds specifically engineered to be resistant to glyphosate.

Bayer’s Roundup ready seeds are among the most widely planted seeds by farmers in the United States, accounting for 70 percent of corn and 90 percent of soybean seeds planted in 2010.

Because investors hate uncertainty, the question marks associated with Bayer’s future sales and potential damages due to lawsuits has shareholders hitting the exits.”

In addition to Roundup toxicity being exposed, traders also cite mounting lawsuits over dicamba-related crop damage as a driving factor for the stock plunge.20 Last year, over 3 million acres of U.S. farmland were destroyed by chemical burns.

As feared by many critics, any crop that is not genetically engineered (GE) to be resistant to dicamba is severely damaged by even small amounts of the herbicide — be it food crops, gardens or trees; even other GE crops resistant to herbicides other than dicamba will shrivel and die in its presence. Monsanto promised its XtendiMax with VaporGrip formula would be less volatile and prone to drift than older versions, but the real-life effects suggest otherwise.

Roundup Required to Bear Cancer Warning in California

Mere days after Johnson’s verdict, Monsanto also lost its legal appeal to block California from requiring a cancer warning on Roundup under its chemical consumer-disclosure law, known as Proposition 65. As reported by Sustainable Pulse:21

“The chemical maker was seeking to force California to remove glyphosate, found in the company’s Roundup products, from the Proposition 65 list of carcinogens.

This decision leaves in place lower court decisions upholding a provision of the voter-approved initiative that allows outside expert scientific findings to be considered when adding chemicals to the public list of carcinogens …

‘Monsanto doesn’t have the right to decide which scientific experts are permitted to inform the public about cancer-causing chemicals. By refusing to consider this case, the Supreme Court has allowed Proposition 65 to keep working the way voters intended when the initiative was passed in 1986,’ said Avinash Kar, senior attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council.”

In this case, the outside expert finding Monsanto was trying to remove from consideration was that of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) — the cancer research arm of the World Health Organization and the “gold standard” in carcinogenicity research — which in 2015 declared glyphosate a “probable human carcinogen” based on the available evidence.22,23

This is another piece of good news, as this means California will be able to require Roundup and other glyphosate-containing products to bear a cancer warning label, and since companies rarely want to go through the extra work of making different product labels for different states, this means all Americans will finally be informed of the fact that Roundup is carcinogenic.

Several Countries Prepare to Ditch Roundup

Bayer is also facing the loss of far bigger markets than U.S. homeowners who might reconsider their use of Roundup.24 The federal court in Brazil recently ruled that all existing registrations of products containing glyphosate will be suspended (and no new glyphosate products will be allowed to be registered).

In Germany, the environment minister has called for the phase-out of glyphosate-based products, and Italy’s deputy prime minister, Luigi Di Maio, has also vowed to oppose further use of such products. French president Emmanuel Macron has also made a campaign pledge to ban glyphosate-based herbicides by 2021,25 and select British retailers have announced their intent to stop selling glyphosate-containing weed killers to the public.

Johnson’s Court Victory Is a Win for All of Us

Getting back to where we started, Johnson’s court victory is not just about justice for one man. This case has opened the eyes of the world to the devious tactics used by Monsanto to deceive us all. Glyphosate-based herbicides like Roundup are the most heavily-used agricultural chemicals of all time, with 1.8 million tons being applied to U.S. fields alone since 1974.

The popularity and widespread use of this herbicide was built on deceit, and there’s really no telling how many people around the world have paid for those lies with their lives. In Argentina, there’s a burgeoning epidemic of children being born with horrendous birth defects and malformations, and the suspected cause is their parent’s exposure to Roundup and other glyphosate formulations.

Food testing reveals glyphosate residues in all foods sampled, and urine levels of glyphosate found in Californians rose 1,200 percent between 1993 and 2016. Glyphosate is also found in water supplies, soil, rain and air samples,26 and has been found to create antibiotic resistance in E.coli and Salmonella to boot.

There’s virtually no escape from this chemical these days, and the list of adverse health effects of glyphosate just keeps getting longer, the more scientists look into it. Researchers have also concluded herbicide formulations such as Roundup are far more toxic than glyphosate in isolation — significantly altering the viability of human cells by disrupting the functionality of cell membranes — thanks to synergistic effects.

Monsanto’s name may have been retired, but its spirit lives on in Bayer AG. Now, at long last, its corporate secrets are out in the open for the world to see, in large part thanks to this court case. And, there are thousands more to be heard. With this victory, our politicians and regulatory agencies will have to face what they’ve allowed to occur and, hopefully, resolve to place human health before corporate profits as we move forward.

Medical Kidnapping by Mayo Clinic

Hospitals aren’t prisons, and patients have a right to seek care elsewhere or leave the hospital against medical advice, even without signing any paperwork. Yet in more cases than you might expect, patients end up feeling intimidated, threatened or mistreated by hospital staff. In extreme cases, like that of Alyssa Gilderhus, the case escalates to the point of “medical kidnapping,” in which the patient is held at the hospital against their will and increasingly isolated from family.

In Gilderhus’ case, the hospital was the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, a facility Alyssa’s parents had initially chosen for her care because of its notable reputation. On Christmas Day 2016, Alyssa, then 18 years old, suffered from a ruptured brain aneurysm. She was rushed to a local hospital, and then to the Mayo Clinic, where neurosurgeons saved her life, against considerable odds.

Troubles started, however, when she was transferred to the hospital’s rehabilitation unit and Alyssa’s mother, Amber, clashed with some of the care providers, including a social worker and head physician. The situation escalated to the point that the hospital banned Amber from seeing her daughter and increasingly sought to isolate Alyssa from the rest of her family, ultimately trying to gain guardianship.

Mayo Clinic Attempts Extremely Rare Move to Get Legal Guardianship of Adult Patient

CNN reported on Alyssa’s story based on interviews with her, her family and others close to the case, including a former member of a Mayo Clinic board and law enforcement officials. After Alyssa’s parents expressed they weren’t happy with some of her care providers, asking that they be replaced, Amber tried to intervene in a meeting a social worker and head physician were having about her family. She was subsequently escorted off the property and not allowed to return. CNN reported:1

“[T]he day before her mother was kicked out of the hospital, a Mayo psychiatrist examined Alyssa and found that she lacked the capacity to make her own medical decisions, according to a summary of her care that her doctors wrote after she left Mayo. Around this time, a hospital social worker went to adult protection services in two counties to try to get those authorities to get guardianship over Alyssa, according to the police. If they had succeeded, she would have become a ward of the state.

Alyssa and her family say that they weren’t told any of this as it was happening but that around this time, they started to feel that Mayo was isolating Alyssa … staffers confiscated Alyssa’s cellphone, laptop and tablet after finding that she’d made a video for her mother, according to Alyssa and her family. They say Alyssa’s visitors were also banned from bringing their devices into the hospital …

Mayo staffers said no one would be allowed to stay overnight with Alyssa, according to Duane and Amber’s sister, April Chance … The family says the doctors also told them that visitors would no longer be allowed to attend Alyssa’s treatment sessions, such as physical and occupational therapy.”

Alyssa’s family, as well as Alyssa (who was legally an adult) requested that she be transferred to a different facility, but the hospital refused. “She was truly being held captive,” Alyssa’s grandmother told CNN. “I would never believe a hospital could do that — never in my wildest dreams.”2

Ultimately, after months in what felt like prison, the family came up with a plan to break Alyssa free, telling the nurses who watched her closely that she needed to come down to the hospital lobby to visit with an elderly relative. When she got to the lobby, and outside to a car where her mother was waiting, Alyssa “escaped” with nurses yelling after her and calling police to report a patient “abduction.”

Police Pursuit of ‘Abducted’ Patient Falls Flat

The Mayo Clinic called police to claim that Alyssa had been abducted from the hospital, even though she left of her own free will and desire. A police chase ensued, with law enforcement pinging the family’s cell phones and following them across the state. Her parents, fearing police would admit Alyssa back to a Mayo Clinic facility, headed to South Dakota, reaching an emergency room for Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls about 12 hours after leaving Mayo Clinic.

Mayo Clinic doctors had claimed that Alyssa was in grave danger after leaving the hospital and required continued hospitalization to protect her health. The Sanford doctors disagreed, prescribing her medications and saying she was well enough to recuperate at home.

In another glaring disagreement, whereas Mayo Clinic claimed Alyssa was not mentally competent enough to make her own decisions, the Sanford doctors believed she could make her own decisions and sign her own consent forms. As soon as the doctors cleared her, the police backed off the case. As reported by CNN:3

“‘If a doctor at another facility says she’s fine and comes up with a second opinion, that kind of takes the law out of it,’ said Chris Vasvick, a Martin County sheriff’s deputy. ‘That’s one doctor’s opinion against another, and that doesn’t have anything to do with law enforcement at all.’

[John] Sherwin, [captain of investigations for the Rochester Police Department] …  agreed. ‘We didn’t have any reason for the police to intervene,’ Sherwin said. He added that Alyssa and her parents had done nothing illegal. No charges were filed against them.”

Mayo Clinic Denies Report

The Mayo Clinic has blasted CNN’s reporting of the story, calling it “inaccurate, incomplete and irresponsible” and citing “highly complex and sensitive family dynamics involved in caring for this patient.”4

“At the heart of this story is a complex situation involving a vulnerable adult in a suspected abusive family environment,” the Mayo Clinic noted, adding, “We fully support our compassionate and dedicated staff who were and remain deeply concerned for the patient’s well-being and safety and exemplify Mayo’s values and commitment to our patients,” the hospital said in a statement.5 Still, this isn’t the first time a hospital has been accused of “medical kidnapping,” and it isn’t likely to be the last.

CNN reported on another case, in which Kristen Spyker says her newborn son was held against her will after he was born with a rare heart defect. Spyker asked for him to be transferred to another hospital with a larger pediatric heart program, but a heart surgeon resisted her requests. A social worker, along with hospital security guards, then suggested postpartum depression was impairing Spyker’s ability to make decisions for her son. Only after threatening legal action was she able to get her son discharged from the hospital.

“Her son then had a successful procedure at another hospital — a different procedure than the one recommended by the first doctor,” CNN reported. Many other parents have shared similar stories on social media, and unbeknownst to many, child protective services in many U.S. states have falsely accused parents of child abuse without any evidence, including in cases of so-called medical neglect.

State Child Abduction Is Big Business

In 1991, the bipartisan National Commission on Children figured out that children were being taken from their families “prematurely or unnecessarily” because federal formulas give states “a strong financial incentive” to do so rather than provide services to keep families together.”6

Children in foster care bring in revenue for counties, such that the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) — the federal law on which almost all state and local legislation and funding for child protective services are based — mandates states to implement child abuse laws on their own, so they can align themselves for the massive funding and grants that go along with the law.

In theory as the years went by, if the goal for this law — to reduce child abuse in the U.S. — had been successful, then today we should need less funding for these programs, not more. Success also should have resulted in fewer children in foster care and even fewer being put up for adoption. But in reality, the opposite happened. Instead of less children in foster care, the numbers went up for nine years after CAPTA was passed. And, layers and layers of state and federal government programs and agencies whose funding depends solely on child abuse occurring were created.

Child abuse is a terrible thing, but thousands of child abuse cases may in fact not be child abuse at all, such as in some cases of rickets, caused by either vitamin D deficiency or aluminum adjuvants in vaccines. Infant rickets perfectly mimics child abuse, and the baby will have virtually no symptoms — until their bones fracture. According to Dr. David Ayoub, a radiologist in Springfield, Illinois, a great number of child abuse cases may in fact be instances of misdiagnosed metabolic dysfunction.7

Informed Consent Must Be Preserved

There are also many cases in which parents who support vaccine choice or exercise their right to not have their children vaccinated are deemed “child abusers.” In cases of divorce, vaccination decisions have even been used to withdraw or grant parental custody. But protecting such medical decisions form the basis for informed consent, a basic human right in which a person has the ability to voluntarily accept or reject a treatment or medical procedure after being fully informed of its possible risks and benefits.

“The most important goal of informed consent,” according to the University of Washington School of Medicine, “is that the patient has an opportunity to be an informed participant in her health care decisions.” It seems a simple premise, but throughout history we’ve seen cases where informed consent was not only challenged but completely ignored — a trend that exists to this day.

Pediatricians have become increasingly aggressive in their insistence that all children receive all federally recommended vaccines, without exceptions, for example, even using bullying, harassment and insults to get their point across. Many parents of vaccine-injured children also face public shaming, bullying and ridicule, with some being accused of lying or endangering other children as they’re asking for an open and honest conversation into vaccine safety and risks.

Vaccine Industry Will Become a Primary Driver of Medical Neglect

Public confidence in vaccines is waning,8 and with it is coming an onslaught of criticism against those who dare question the federally recommended vaccine schedule. Vaccine orthodoxy dictates that humans must believe vaccination is safe and effective, and that government-mandated vaccines are always a good thing. But the fact is vaccines are tolerated by some people and devastating to others.

Still, the vaccine industry is poised to become a primary driver of medical neglect cases going forward, as vaccine mandates become increasingly common. Some states have already made strides toward preventing this overreach of power by Child Protective Services (CPS) and the courts. For instance, Texas legislation includes protective language for parents filing a conscientious/religious vaccine exemption for their children, while in Oregon, the Oregon Department of Human Services issued a memo that states not vaccinating a child by itself does not constitute medical neglect.

Still, even commercials are trying to tap into parents’ guilt in an attempt to spread vaccine-deficient negligence. Such is the case with Merck’s 2016 ads featuring its human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. The commercials show adults with cervical cancer, then flash back to their teen years, implying that the HPV vaccine could have prevented the cancer.

“Some people on Twitter labeled the commercials ‘bullying’ and ‘super sketchy’ and accused the company of trying to guilt-trip parents to bolster corporate profits,” The Washington Post reported,9 not to mention the fact that they don’t highlight the vaccine’s many health risks or the fact that it’s not proven to prevent cancer. This is an issue that affects adults as well as children, however, with bills being introduced to penalize employees for opting out of workplace vaccines or threatening to fire them if they exercise their right of refusal.

How to Stay Safe if You’re in the Hospital

If you’re in the hospital recovering from surgery due to chronic illness or injury, remember that as the patient, you are the most powerful person in the hospital, and you have a choice of what treatments you receive, from vaccinations to surgeries to medications and beyond. However, the hospital system works on the assumption that you will not claim that power. Doctors, nurses and hospital administrators are offering you products and services, and they’re trying to get you to accept them without question, but you have the right to say no to any treatment you do not want.

You also have the right to revoke permission you previously may have given. If you are incapacitated, your spouse, followed by your children, has the most influence. Ideally, you want someone with you 24 hours a day, who can double-check what medications you’re being given and why, make sure nurses and doctors are washing their hands and who can ask questions about any procedures being done.
